DMDCAF Entotainment Update (3/14/2002)

Sarah Jones is at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts this weekend only (March 14-17) doing her new show Women Can't Wait. Already performed before the United Nations and the Nepalese Supreme Court (with the hope that new women's rights legislation would be positively impacted), Women Can't Wait portrays eight international women where she becomes eight women from around the world who demonstrate the need to fight laws that limit women's rights and freedoms. Sarah is so good the FCC (head of which is Colin Powell's son) absurdly banned "Your Revolution," her uplifting female response to misogynist tendencies in much of commercial rap and hip hop.

The Asian American Film Festival continues through March 17th. Candice has already managed to see several great films and there are surely more to be witnessed if you hurry!

The Sixth Annual Youth Speaks Teen Poetry Slam is 6:30 p.m. on Saturday March 30th at Yerba Buena Center for The Arts. This is the finals, so there is always lots of impressive young talent present.

The one and only Jonathan Richman is back at the intimate confines of The Make Out Room on 22nd Street in San Francisco for three nights: March 31-April 2. Advance tickets available at the Make-Out Room or Aquarius Records.

Jane Siberry is having a big sale at her intriguing web site SHEEBA.CA. She says the web site is about to undergo another metamorphosis and hopefully she is going to be able to record her first studio album of original material in too long a time.

It's women's history month and the "month" concept is a weird one, but it does mean PBS has some great programming emphasizing the lives of women all through March.

No one has a voice like Glenn Yarbrough and you can hear for yourself on April 13th at the Amador Theater in Pleasanton (925.931.5340, $19 advance).

Robyn Hitchcock will be at the Great American Music Hall on Tuesday, April 23rd with his wordy eccentricities and eyes blinking galore, apparently sans the Soft Boys.

Great Big Sea are a very fun mix of traditional Gaelic and energetic pop from New Foundland. They don't make it to Northern California too often, so try to check 'em out at Slim's on Friday, April 26th for only $12 advance.

Finally, my very favorite performer/writer, David Cale, is working on a two person theater project with Anne Galjour at Yerba Buena Center for The Arts and there should be a performance some time this spring. I'll certainly keep you posted!

School and viruses have kept us too busy or unconscious to be much up on theater (though Culture Clash were incredible as always earlier this month). But we'll catch a break soon and have more comprehensive listings and other worthwhile adventures before you know it!
