DMDCAF Personal Update (1/18/2002)

Candice is still loving life AND her students at Marina Middle School. The basketball team had a "learning experience" of a season, but still managed to finish above .500 at 5-4, which was very commendable. Next year (provided no eligibility issues surface) she should have a very talented and experienced team to take to battle. In the meantime, Candice's coaching reputation is getting so large in the community that she is now the head coach of a San Francisco Second Grade Team. They don't keep score, but they have lots of energy. It's clear that WBNA general managers will be knocking on our door any day now to bring Mrs. F-D's coaching exceptionalities to a professional team.

David has officially resumed his studies at UCSanta Cruz and it is going smashingly well for the first two weeks (before any major papers are due I guess). I should be finished with all my undergraduate work and my senior thesis by Fall 2002 (December), a wee ten years later than planned. By the way, does anyone have any contacts at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts? I am trying to figure out some sort of work study/internship possibility for the spring relative to their theater/film/whatever areas and looking for any possible names. Back at UCSC, my Tuesdays and Thursdays are marathon days, but I've got excellent cheap tofubeansrice eats at the Oakes Cafe to get me through the day with enough energy. It's hard to be there "only for school" and not get to enjoy the incredible environment of Santa Cruz as I have wall to wall classes--but I guess that's the appropriate reality of doing this ten years late!!! I'm grateful for the opportunity to focus on my education.

Study/work all day and play at night. That's the current plan. But when we don't get enough studying done in the day or just have too much to do, we've got to study through the night. So our commitments to most everything these days are tentative (and reduced in general), but we still go a bunch and we encourage each of you to venture out to anything that sounds appealing, and call (925.937.2290) or email us if you want to meet up before or after!

On to the potential activities:

Venue 9 on 9th Street has a terrific looking series of female performances grouped together. We're going to the Sunday night (1/20) combo of Groucho: A Day in the D'Elia Soup and Date Me.

Say Ray (we're going tonight, Friday)
Written by Ron Jones, directed by David Ford, performed by Ron Jones and Michael Rice It all started with an inheritance. Ray Fernandez, a mentally disabled man was suddenly rich. His board and care operator become his legal guardian and together, they took off for Mexico where they filled their time with storybook adventures. At least until their money ran out. So, feeling desperate they took the obvious next step and tried robbing a bank: miraculously escaping the consequences of their actions. Suddenly alone and moneyless in the town of Uruapan, Ray had to listen to the one person he had always avoided - himself. And that's where the story starts to get really interesting. Steinbeck, Godot and the Three Stooges on the same stage! time: Thursday - Saturday at 8 pm

The next two shows at the Marsh look really interesting too, a new Charlie Varon experiment, and Mark Kenward's piece, The Yoga of Moby Dick.

THE ENDURANCE is playing with a short film Around Cape Horn from 1929 that is supposed to be extraordinary and i'm in the mood given that i've just finished a book about 18th century seamen. We hope to go Saturday evening.

The SF Indie Fest is coming 1/31-2/10 and it's all over bay area theaters, but without much "commercial" help this year. Definitely looks to be some interesting stuff so check it out.

March 7-17th will be the Asian American Film Festival in SF, Berkeley, and San Jose. Usually a lot of interesting films there. If you're interested in volunteering, check out
http://www.naatanet.org/calendar/sfiaaff/fest_volunteer.html and look there soon for the actual schedule of films.

If you like French films, you can rarely do better than Eric Rohmer, and they are showing a whole bunch of his for a while at the Pacific Film Archive in Berkeley. And they continue to have other amazing series of films you can see nowhere else.

JONATHAN RICHMAN update: After visiting about fifteen states in the month of February, Jonathan will be back home for three shows at the Make-Out Room 3/31, 4/1, and 4/2. If you RSVP now, we'll commit to the night you suggest and if it's your first JR experience, it's our treat.

Indigo Girls at Slim's on 2/15.

Glenn Yarbrough will be at the Amador Valley Theater in Pleasanton for those of you interested in hearing one of the smoothest voices ever live.

http://www.sfsketchfest.com/sfsf.html Comedy group sketch festival--we hope to go to one night of this before 1/27, but this mention is especially for an infamous film editor who loves live comedy.

The American Astronaut by Cory McCabe and The Billy Nayer Show is coming back to SF but Candice does not want to say where it's playing.

Laurie Anderson is at Zellerbach Auditorium in March and it's way past time we saw her live. Anyone know how to get an ushering gig there?

The Good War and Those Who Refused to Fight It was on SF PBS this past week and I screwed up my videotaping of it--I did not videotape this past Tuesday. If it's on the PBS station in your area and you are able to videotape it, I'd be thrilled. http://www.pbs.org/itvs/thegoodwar/

Similarly missed...Tim Booth has officially ended his tenure as the voice of the band James...hope he will produce other work that makes its way to California. Couldn't fly to England to see the farewell tour, so hope the DVD comes out and does the tour justice!

The much-acclaimed lead performance in the short documentary film "COACH" did not qualify for this year's Sundance Film Festival; however, we promise to have a big screen screening of "COACH" at 30 View Lane in the very near future. Combine with an outdoors game playing kinda day. If you have a preferred weekend day for this kind of activity in the near future, please
email or call us with your suggestion (and game suggestions are welcome as well).

Time to go read about 700 pages.
