May/June 2003

Spring break was a blast! My trip to the Netherlands and Belgium was indeed a fabulous one. Liz Fierst was nice enough to let me tag along with her to visit her brother/sister in-law/nephews/niece in Brussels. They are a wonderful family. They opened their home to me and took good care of me. We visited various places in the Netherlands and Belgium. We ate good; mussels and frites, and great home cooking. And of course, I had a great time hanging out with the kids; Stefan, Maddie, and Matthew. I couldn't ask for a better vacation. Thanks to Liz and the Andersons.

David and I enjoyed the San Francisco International Film Festival this year. We saw a couple of good films, a couple of great films, and a couple not so great films. We loved Heart of the Sea: Kapolioka'ehukai (playing on PBS this month); Girlhood (I and another colleague of mine took 150 students to see); and Together (Chinese). All of these films were touching and very powerful. I definitely recommend these films. Other worthwhile films we saw were Music for Weddings and Funerals (Norwegian); Lost Boys of Sudan (locally produced documentary); and Piedras (Spanish).

Josh Kornbluth is always exciting to see and we enjoyed seeing two improvisations of his new piece, Love and Taxes. Everyone should check it out when it hits the Magic Theater on June 27th. His stories are crazy, hilarious, touching, and real. What more could you ask for in a performance.

The end of the school year is coming quickly and it will be hard to believe that another entire school year is complete. But summer arrives and we are excited for Amy and Bob's wedding in Albuquerque, NM. David and I plan to see the sites of the southwest. Hopefully we won't shrivel up and die in the desert while sightseeing. After that I will hang out with my girl, Robin, who should be giving birth at the end of June. She is quite the happy pregnant woman. I am very excited for Robin and Richard. After that, I must take classes for my credential. Hey, it never ends.

Take care,

Candice y David
