August capped off a fantastic summer for Candice and David. In the second week of August, we journeyed to Oceanside with Grandma Helen and mom Dunham to visit mom and dad Fukumoto! We celebrated dad's birthday on August 11th with a wonderful feast prepared by mom, and got to visit with Mia, Carah, Rod, Debbie, Carlton, Aunties Helen and Gladys, and Uncles George and Frank! The rest of our week in Oceanside was filled with swimming, games, the Wild Ride tour, Legoland, and lots of coastal driving!
Back to reality, Candice frantically prepared for her fourth year at Marina Middle School and her first year as an eighth grade U.S. History social studies teacher--an opportunity she has been most eager to begin! She spent a week at a conference of exceptionally talented and energetic social studies teachers throughout the San Francisco Unified School District that has helped Candice find an invaluable community of committed and innovative teachers to help her in her growth and creativity as a teacher. She is also excited to coach the Marina girl's basketball team again, though she is going to be very busy!
David has enthusiastically begun his new position at the Regional Oral History Office of UC Berkeley. He is learning all the ins and outs of transcribing, collaborating on updating the ROHO web site, and continues to develop his interviewing, video, and writing skills with projects both inside and outside of ROHO! David is also trying to make sure to find time to play basketball, swim, and hike--because the dangers of the Dunham metabolism are all too known in a desk job. So, invite us to play or do something athletic any chance you get because we need it!!
Thanks to everyone who came out to the Mr. Smith Goes to Washington/Obskuristan event on Labor Day weekend. It was great seeing the movie for the first time since I was a child--projected on our wall no less--and it was even better to see the hilarious, right on SF Mime Troupe/Josh Kornbluth take on it disturbingly combined with our current international unreal reality. Speaking of which, September 21st is International Peace Day and we would like to find some way to celebrate it with likeminded folks. Please drop us a line if you have suggestions. Everyone is always welcome here, or let's have an outing!!!
This month we look forward to celebrating Grandma Helen's very special birthday on September 14th and doing as much on the Entotainment Update as we can possibly find time for. Please check it out and join us for anything that sounds interesting--or suggest an event of your own! Let us know your thoughts on the evolving web site itself--we are still playing and we invite you to play along with us!! Your ideas are always welcome!!!
Love and all the shave ice you can devour,
