October 2002
Misty Morning Greetings,
Out of all those film festivals in September,
who woulda thunk the most exciting would be the Orinda
Film Festival? It ended up being filled with excellent films of
all kinds--especially numerous outstanding documentaries including Daughter
from Danang, Daddy and Papa,
Honor Bound,
and one hilarious mockumentary: Hacks!
Moreover, the festival board had the uncommon sense to let David run
the kiosk/box office all weekend. A last minute arrival on the scene,
it was a great pleasure to promote and handle that aspect of the weekend's
festivities. Armed with a crew of enthusiastic volunteers of all ages
(from grammar school to retirement), we handled sell outs complete with
rush lines, will call, filmmakers, and heavily promoted to get maximum
attendance at every showing. And it was a very impressive event all
the way around, with frequent capacity crowds--and always extremely
enthusiastic crowds! The best news of all is that the Orinda Film Festival
will follow-up their successful debut with the Second Annual Orinda
Film Festival next year, and I hope to play an even greater role
in next year's event! So mark your calendars now for September 26-28,
2003!!
Candice was my trusty standby volunteer all weekend,
but fortunately we were so well staffed that she was free to enjoy several
films and spend the rest of her weekend GRADING! Yes, it's that time
of year again, education fans. Time for grading and making the world
go round. Candice has never been more excited about teaching. She loves
teaching U.S. History and is invigorated in her first year as Social
Studies Chair! She met numerous inspiring, experienced teachers at her
social studies teachers leadership cadre, a year long group that will
continue to challenge and inspire Candice to new levels of success.
Most of all, it's all about the students, and Candice is thrilled to
report an extremely enthusiastic first debate of the year that had her
students thinking critically and speaking more eloquently than they
realized they were capable of. It is still early in a long and sure
to be challenging year, but Candice knows she has an outstanding opportunity
to see a lot of students grow and inspire her in return.
David is awhirl in his new position with the
Regional Oral History Office
at UC Berkeley. There are a lot of amazing and intelligent employees
at ROHO who are very open to collaboration. While learning the complicated
art and science of transcription, I am also getting my feet wet as an
interviewer for the Rosie the Riveter/Richmond WWII and beyond history
project, and also collaborating on an overhaul of the current ROHO web
site with an eye toward a future where we will have all transcripts
available on-line, along with audio and eventually video as well!! All
experiences/suggestions in these areas are always welcome as we are
researching and experimenting to try to make the future the present
as soon as possible.
Meanwhile, basketball tryouts began this week,
and this is always a grueling process for Coach Fukumoto-Dunham. So
many girls came out that just sorting through the try outs is an exhausting
experience, physically and emotionally, as so many girls have to get
the painful news that they did not make the team. But this year's group
looks to be very talented and hopefully will come together well as a
team of many experienced eighth graders try for one great success together
before moving on to high school. Candice considered not even coaching
this year because she does get so excited about the season--and with
so many other new responsibilities and challenges--she thought it might
be too much. But now the season is about to start, and she is ready
for the challenge. However, if any of you have availability weekday
afternoons and an interest in being an assistant coach, you are more
than welcome to join Candice!
Finally, David has started an ambitious and exciting
project to develop a web documentary with the Z Space to track the New
Works Initiative and more! The New Works Initiative is an exciting new
approach to theater development being headed by the Z
Space and Magic Theater,
along with several other Bay Area theaters. In the course of this project,
I am going to observe and in some cases videotape rehearsals and other
behind the scenes workings/development of new theater projects. I will
be developing a web page that will share this behind the scenes documentation
with interested theater audiences. Thoughts and ideas for this still
taking shape project are as welcome as ever! But it is very exciting
as many of the most outstanding creative forces in the Bay Area and
beyond are part of the initial new works, including David Dower, Josh
Kornbluth, Anne Galjour, David Cale, Neena Beber, and many talented
others!
With all this excitement around us, somehow we
have never felt more ready for the finally arriving, cool fall/winter
weather! Enough sun already. Bring on the MIST!!! And drop us a line
if you want to join us for a misty morning weekend hike!!
peace think peace think peace make peace respect
life live peace,
Candice
y David
