December 2002
Christmas comes early this year as the four musicians listed at the
very top of our Musical Notions section all decided to perform live
for us in San Francisco this December:
Jonathan Richman on December 5th (as Jonathan helps Candice celebrate
her little 3-0 birthday--maybe we can get him to sing the beautiful
"Not Yet Three"--and any first time Jonathaners who RSVP today
are our treat!); Linda
Tillery on December 13th (and 14th); Ozomatli
on December 14th; and Jane
Siberry on December 19th! We hope to see you at one or more
of these exciting shows!
In between seeing some of our favorite musicians this month, we hope
to reflect a little more on some of the great theater, film, and educational
experiences of the past year. It has been a frenetic and rewarding year.
It's hard to believe David shared his college graduation celebration
with fourteen eighth grade graduates in Maui! It's hard to believe Candice
just completed her third decade of life and still momentarily thinks
life is barely worth living every time she loses a game of speed!! Yet
Candice is showing remarkable strength and ability as a teacher and
a coach. With a dominant early stretch of the basketball season, reality
has set in with games against extremely talented opposing teams, and
now the reality of two of the best players on the team having to leave
the team in order to reapply themselves to academics. Candice is as
composed and clear as ever about the alignment of her teaching and coaching.
Thus, while this won't be her winningest year as a basketball coach,
it is already her most successful one. Meanwhile, David is continuing
the plunge into the varied possibilities of oral history. Everything
he learns in this realm is vital to his theater, documentary film, and
educational interests.
Thanksgiving holiday, though a challenging day as a historical reference
point, was a wonderful gathering of family at 30 View Lane this year.
Unfortunately, the doubles ping pong tournament had to be postponed
due to players being too stuffed with yams and crab--and perhaps too
exhausted from Dion and David's now cliche political clashes, yet a
good time was had by everyone who testified.
And though David and Candice won't be doing battle at stores to buy
you any stuff this year, we hope another kind of generosity shows through.
We would love for you to join us at 30 View Lane on December 31st and/or
January 1st to reflect on the past year, imagine the new year, or just
have some fun! Please RSVP
by 12/23 if you think you can make it!!
Love and creative juices,
Candice
y David
